John and Margaret raised their family during the early- to mid-1900s in central Kansas, a largely-agricultural state located in the Great Plains of the United States. Both the Dreiling and Denning heritages are European (mostly Germanic), linked to the Volga River Germans that emigrated to America in the late 1800s.

Many Germans had colonized the Volga region of Russia in the late 1700s under the reign of Catherine the Great. Thousands of these colonists later fled the area under duress due to failed promises (land, food, housing, no military duty, etc.) from the ruling Russians, attacks from the nomadic Asiatic tribes (Kirghiz) and the "Russification" policies of Alexander II.
